More jobs to go at AltaVista

US search engine company AltaVista is to axe 25 per cent of its workforce for the second time in four months, resulting in the loss of 200 employees from its Californian head office.

NEWS A spokesman for the controlling owner, CMGI, attributed the job cuts to restructuring in response to weakening interest in online advertising. The company now intends to concentrate on the more promising B2B sector and on marketing its search engine technology. In disposing of its media portals division in September last year, AltaVista dismissed a quarter of its personnel.
