NEWS The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) will now issue a barcode on all packages issued under a defence contracting document as part of the department's Total Asset Visibility project. Trade association e-centre UK has been working with the MoD to advise on the implementation of the project. Andrew Osborne, policy and research director at e-centre UK, said: "This brings the MoD in line with other commercial standards. It has had its own tracking system as the majority of its suppliers provide both private and defence sector it needs to use one standard to simplify the process and reduce costs." Suppliers who deal with military and commercial requirements will now be able to issue one barcode instead of two incompatible sets reducing costs and simplifying paperwork. Osborne said: "It covers war and non war goods so that whether they are sending baked beans or weapons to the front the MoD can make sure it knows where all consignments are."
