Scientists harness peer-to-peer in cancer battle

A revolutionary scheme is to be unveiled in California on Tuesday to use peer-to-peer (P2P) networking to help in the fight against cancer.

NEWS The project is a joint venture between Oxford University, Intel, the National Foundation for Cancer Research and P2P specialist United Devices. The programme will run along the lines of the massively successful Seti@Home programme, which uses unused computing power to search recorded radio waves for signs of alien life. Participants download software which automatically starts processing information when your PC stands idle. In this way, the schemes can get access to an enormous amount of computing power. The innovative scheme will use the P2P method to test chemical combinations for their usefulness in fighting cancer.
