Walkmans and Playstations get IP addresses

Every Sony audiovisual device from the Playstation 2 to the humble Walkman is to get its own IP address as standard.

NEWS The move was announced at the Accenture Global Communications Forum in Miami earlier this week, and could ultimately allow music and images to be piped over the internet and displayed at any device, anywhere in the world. According to a report on BBC online, deputy president of Sony, Ed Grebow, said the era of stand-alone products is over, claiming every refrigerator and automatic garage door will one day have its own IP address. Sony plans to use IP version 6 to supply the number of addresses required for such widespread deployment. The company is also working on a product called Airboard that will act as the central hub for inter-device communication. Sony is also working within the Bluetooth alliance, and with US-based Cablevision, on a home networking system that will connect all machines in every household.
