NEWS Oracle has teamed up with Sun to get businesses to move their applications away from Microsoft, in a bid to thwart its all-encompassing .NET strategy.
Oracle and Sun have announced migration software to port applications written on Windows to the Java Platform J2EE. This means that programs originally running on Windows would be able to run off Oracle's 9i Application Server or Sun's Solaris Operating Environment.
The two companies say they are trying to appeal to developers struggling to retrain in Microsoft's new programming languages for .NET, and anxious to move old applications to new internet platforms.
They say today's announcement represents a comprehensive system for moving away from Microsoft platforms. It includes migration software for applications, data and operating systems.
The announcement follows attempts earlier this year for Microsoft to tempt Java developers back into the fold with JuMP (Java User Migration Path), designed to migrate Java code to Windows.
