Tesco.com snaps-up ecommerce award

Prunella Scales must be doing something right...

NEWS Tesco.com has been rewarded for its online achievements with a gong at the @chievement 2001 Awards held this afternoon. The ecommerce awards ceremony, now in its second year, is sponsored by Barclays B2B and the Sunday Telegraph and recognises innovative companies of all sizes, from start-ups to major corporates. Tesco.com, which claims to receive 70,000 orders a week, took the prize in the large company category. Other winners included crocus.co.uk in the small business section and Majestic Wine Warehouse in the mid-corporate category. Majestic was also named overall winner. All entrants, of whom there were 250, had to be older than eight months with ecommerce models developed for the UK market. Finalists were chosen for their ability to demonstrate how they had integrated an "exciting" ecommerce strategy into their business. According to event organiser, Andrew Routledge, this year's awards were markedly different from last year's. He said: "[There were] less of the dot-com 'shop windows' of 18 months ago and a far better quality of entrant". This morning Tesco.com announced that it will take its successful ecommerce model into the US through its involvement with GroceryWorks, a Safeway venture.
