Linux to clone Microsoft's baby

.NET gets the Linux touch...

NEWS Ximian, a Linux software developer, has released tools for the developer community to create an open source, Linux-based version of Microsoft's .NET development platform. The project, named Mono, will hope to open up the Microsoft platform to the Linux community and ensure the software giant doesn't gain too tight a strangle hold on the .NET system. Jon Perr, VP for marketing at Ximian, said that they were essentially endorsing what he called a very good and robust system, applauding Microsoft for submitting standards, to international standards bodies, for .NET. Perr added: "On the other hand it means that applications don't have to run on a Microsoft box. That, they won't be too happy with." Microsoft introduced the .NET-operating environment for internet applications last year, with adequate details to allow programmers to produce their own compatible versions.
