'No jobs at stake' Motorola assures Scottish workers

NEWS Motorola has reacted to union fears that it is pulling the plug on its semiconductor manufacturing operations in Scotland to deny any jobs cuts will be made. The US mobile phone giant has quashed speculation that jobs in the already hard hit Scottish manufacturing sector are at stake, insisting that rumours of imminent closure are unfounded. The company has already undertaken a number of cost-cutting initiatives and analysts had suggested the manufacturing plants in South Queensferry and East Kilbride may be a likely target for further cutbacks. The downturn in the semiconductor market forced Japanese giant NEC to lay off 600 Scottish workers at the start of this month.
