Digital processors offer a way forward for mobile chip giant...

NEWS Texas Instruments has unveiled new digital processors which it claims are 12 times faster than current digital signal processors. In Bangalore yesterday the world's leading chipmaker for mobile phones announced the new architecture means the processors will be more flexible, ensuring a greater degree of customisation meaning applications will be built a lot quicker. Based on the 'Mantra' platform, TI said in a statement that the devices are the first 32-bit DSPs with on-board flash memory and performance capabilities of up to 150 million instructions per second. With the markets closed in the US for Labour Day TI shares closed on Friday at $33.10 - healthier than the year's low of $26.28 but well down from its high of $67.06.
