NEWS Autonomy has signed a deal that will see its intelligent agent software being used by TV companies to locate video footage. The deal, between Autonomy's subsidiary Dremedia and TV news technology specialist Quantel, will see Quantel bundling Autonomy's software with its own products. Autonomy, a one-time hot-stock on the Nasdaq, is a UK manufacturer of agent technology which is able to find information by context and concept, rather than keyword searches. It has always claimed the nature of its technology has the potential to work across various media. Autonomy recently set-up Dremedia, which is dedicated to building Autonomy-based applications for the video and broadcast market. In turn Quantel's customers include news agency ITN, GMTV, Carlton and ITV Sport. Quantel customers typically spend £400,000 to £500,000 on its technology. The deal would see Autonomy receive an undisclosed cut of this. Simon Fletcher, European communications manager for Autonomy, said: "Our technology will enable news providers to search for video footage via context. It will save time as firms will no longer have to send runners to the spool room to hunt down relevant film, but will be able to find it on their desktop."
