Sun unveils Solaris 9

Beta OS released to testers...

NEWS Sun has released version nine of its Unix operating system Solaris for beta testing. The beta version is available on Sun's UltraSparc chips and 32-bit Intel chips and is unveiled just weeks before the 25 October launch of Micosoft's XP operating system. Sun claims the new version offers several improvements on Solaris 8 including live upgrades to unused parts of a storage system, improved ability to control the distribution of CPU power between software processes and the ability to write audio and data CDs. Solaris 9 is due for release in 2002, but is available for download now to developers registered with Sun's early access program.
