NEWS Third quarter profits from Sybase have topped analysts' expectations, but revenue has been hard hit by the economic downturn. Pro forma profits were 20 cents per share, beating the 18 cents per share analysts had forecast. But pro forma net revenue dropped to $20m, compared with $26.7m a year ago. When amortisation and restructuring expenses were included, Sybase posted a $7.1m net loss for the quarter, a drop from its $16.5m loss for the same quarter last year. Revenue for the quarter ending 30 September was down to $226.3m, from $239.1m in the same quarter last year. Licence fee revenue saw the biggest drop - down to $90.6m from $114.4m last year. But revenue from services grew to $135.7m, up from $124.7m a year earlier.
