NEWS Chip maker Agere Systems said it will axe 950 jobs - eight per cent of its work force - as demand for semiconductors continues to fall. Agere - a Lucent Technologies spin-off - previously announced plans to cut 6,000 jobs by the end of this year, the latest cuts will bring Agere's staff count to 11,300. The chipmaker has been particularly hard hit by the misfortunes of its biggest customer Lucent. In a statement, Agere CEO John Dickson said the year had been difficult, but added that the company was on track with its cost cutting restructuring plans.
