NEWS The UK government has called in expert help from the industry to advise on how to develop an effective policy framework for information sharing. Leading professionals including IBM's Dave Snowden, Wendy Hayes from the CBI, Chris Collinso from Centrica and BP Amoco's Geoff Parcell, will form an advisory panel to help government officials get to grips with knowledge management. Under e-envoy Andrew Pinder, a government team has been charged with developing the way the public sector identifies, captures and uses information. The team will also investigate the possibilities of knowledge sharing between Whitehall departments and wider public bodies like the NHS. The e-envoy's team has spent the last 12 months making sure all departments are connected to the secure intranet - or Knowledge Network - to enable secure access to information and databases. The second UK Online annual report, published last week, claimed the government Knowledge Network was already being used to considerable success. "The introduction of the Knowledge Network has been a considerable achievement," the report said. "Now it needs to mature and become embedded in departmental practices, including through a range of self-sustaining communities across and beyond the departments. This is the main task for the Knowledge Network over the coming year."
