NEWS Oracle is investing E130m (£80m) in a global R&D centre opened in Dublin yesterday by Irish Prime Minister Berty Ahern. The US company spent E7m (£4.3m) building the centre, which is designed to centralise all its technology and services teams. Dermot O'Kelly, managing director of Oracle Ireland, said he planned to recruit 250 staff to work at the facility. However, it's a far cry from Oracle's recruitment targets for 2001. Last year, the company announced it wanted to double its 975-strong Irish workforce. However, the economic slowdown forced O'Kelly to ditch his plans. Oracle's Dublin operation handles $2bn in sales to Europe and the Middle-East. O'Kelly admitted there had been a drop in sales in the past quarter but said he still expected to make a profit due to drastic cost-cutting measures.
