Spies like us: BBC site encourages MI5 make-believe

NEWS The BBC has launched a spoof MI5 site where you can pretend to be a secret agent. The thameshouse.net was launched in conjunction with its latest drama, Spooks, which will be broadcast on BBC1 next week. The site features interactive role playing and conspiracy games for any wannabe MI5 agents. Users can sign up for an email newsletter which appears to come from one of the characters in the drama who also helps to set tasks for the online agents. A BBC spokeswoman said: "The plot on the internet is separate from the television series, but it does provide clues for the online agents. The main task for the agents is to try to save the UK from an imaginary terrorist attack and anyone can participate in the game." The technology of the site is built by the BBC's Fictionlab, an arm of BBC Online. The BBC is said to be advertising in the satirical magazine Private Eye to get more viewers to sign up on its site. Jamie Cason, editor of drama and entertainment for BBC online, told silicon.com all the technology is built internally: "The website is hosted by the BBC at its data centre and all the technology is developed in-house using Real Media and the BBC's bespoke message board programme. "We are keen to get feedback from our viewers and see how they will take on new programming formats and platforms."
