NEWS Toasters in a Dorset village have started to speak Russian, thanks to some interference from the BBC World Service. A transmission station in Rampisham is sending the World Service transmissions to the nearby village of Hooke. As a result, toasters, telephones and electric organs are all picking up the signal and have started to comment on Russian current affairs. Apparently, any two appliances with two kinds of metal next to each other can pick up radio waves. John Dalton, chairman of Hooke Parish Council, is reported as saying: "It's unnerving. Normally it just makes toast." Residents have also come across instances of windscreen wipers starting up by themselves when they get within range of the transmission station.
