NEWS Sun Microsystems' added another plank to its web services strategy this morning with the release of its latest portal server. Unlike previous versions, Sun One Portal Server 6.0 provides support for Sun, IBM and BEA application servers. It follows the release of Solaris 9 last week which boasted an integrated Sun One application server. John Fanelli, director of product marketing for Sun One software, said: "The inclusion of the Sun One application server shows that we are really serious about software. We wouldn't put anything in Solaris unless we were as it's our crown jewels." He dismissed accusations that in bundling the application with the operating system Sun was acting like its greatest rival. However, he did admit that unless users installed Sun's application server some functionality will be lost. The portal will form the entry level layer to Sun One enabling users to build web services. It is, said Fanelli, the single infrastructure upon which organisations can build any type of platform for their services. While the Sun One Portal server 6.0 currently only supports the Solaris operating system, support for Windows and Linux will be added in the first half of next year. Additional features include being able to work collaboratively in groups and communities as well as a built in identity management.
