NEWS A German programmer has completed the first step of running the Linux operating system on a Microsoft Xbox games console. Programmer Michael Steil has run a small program called linuxpreview on the device, making a small graphic of Tux, the open source movement's penguin mascot, appear on the screen. He claims that the first functioning Xbox program to be written without the use of Microsoft's own software development kit. The program is only a small step towards running a fully-functional Linux operating system on the Xbox. An anonymous donor has put up a total of $200,000 to encourage Steil and fellow Linux enthusiasts in their quest to get an open source operating system on the Xbox.
