NEWS Microsoft has marked 4 September as the launch date for the public beta of the next version of Windows Media Player. Codenamed Corona, the ninth version of the media player will be launched by Microsoft chairman and chief software architect Bill Gates at a two-day summit in Hollywood. Few details of the product have been released, but it is known that Windows Media 9 is based on an updated encoding and decoding engine which compresses data to half the size of current MP3 files. Microsoft has promised that users will be able to enjoy home theatre quality sound and video.
