Celebrate the unsung server room heroes

Show them you love them this Sys Admin Day...

NEWS July is here and it's time to show our appreciation of those essential, if unappreciated, heroes of office life - the systems administrators. The last Friday in July has been designated as "a special day, once a year, to acknowledge the worthiness and appreciation of the person occupying the role [of SysAdmin], especially as it is often this person who really keeps the wheels of your company turning", according to www.sysadminday.com. The day is not simply devoted to the humble helpdesk staff who spend their days fixing ailing Windows machines, but for all the people who keep LANs, WANs, databases, desktops and servers on their feet. Even the people who look after the telephone system get a look in. The website says: "Remember this is one day to recognise your System Administrator for their workplace contributions and to promote professional excellence. Thank them for all the things they do for you and your business." This is the third year that SysAdmin Day has been running, since it was first proposed by a US systems administrator, Ted Kekatos. A list of suitable gifts has been posted on the official SysAdmin appreciation day site, http://www.sysadminday.com. But some, like the home cinema system, may be beyond the resources of many companies in the current climate. Some less expensive alternatives, such as cake and ice cream, are also proposed.
