COMMENT Remember this: "Windows XP gives me more choices and flexibility and better compatibility with the rest of the computing world." These were the words of a 'Windows' fan - later revealed to be a freelance writer, who was paid by Microsoft to pen this glowing testimony (see http://www.silicon.com/a55966 for more). So, in light of that - what do we make of this: "We like what Microsoft's done - we think they've come up with a lot of great innovations." More Microsoft-bought PR nonsense? Not a bit of it. These are the words of Jason Spisak, marketing director for Linux vendor Lycoris. So that's pretty much turned our world upside down today. When Linux vendors start to go public with their admiration for Gates & Co, it causes all sorts of problems. Such fierce rivalries make for great news - public pronouncement upon the failings of your rivals is a far more newsworthy stance. This kind of chumminess is just not on. It's not the first time potentially fierce spats have fizzled out before they even ignited recently. Last month for example Siebel, supposedly fearful of Microsoft's advances on the CRM sector, planned an uplifting annual conference to rally the troops into fighting off the advances of the Seattle behemoth... or so we assumed. In anticipation of a juicy story, we saved up that week's word quota of 'attack', 'row', 'spat' and even thought we might be able to squeeze in a 'brouhaha' and possibly even a 'rumpus'. And who did Siebel book to deliver the keynote speech at said conference? Bill Gates, chairman of Microsoft. We despair. Come on people get nasty. It makes for better news.
