Microsoft shunts XP update

Release dates gets further into the distance

NEWS Microsoft has delayed the planned release date of its next update to Windows XP by about a month.

The software maker had originally said Windows XP Service Pack 2 would be released in its final form in the first half of this year, but a representative said on Wednesday that the release is now likely to come later in the summer.

Windows XP Service Pack 2 is largely intended to bolster the security of Windows XP, but also will add features such as a pop-up ad blocker to Internet Explorer.

Internally, Microsoft is now targeting a July release as opposed to the June release originally intended, according to a source familiar with the company's plans. Microsoft has already released one near-final "release candidate" version of the software but is planning on another one before it puts its stamp of approval on the software.

The company representative said Microsoft is still trying to incorporate the feedback it has got from testers of the software.

"Ultimately, it will ship when it meets the quality standards Microsoft customers demand," the representative said.

Microsoft has shifted a significant number of its Windows staff to the service pack release, a move that has also pushed back the company's timeframe for launching Longhorn, the next major update to Windows.

    That'll be a first then ;-)

I have been testing Windows XP Service Pack 2 (build 2149) Release Candidate Two (RC2) for a couple of days now.

And already, Service Pack 2 is obviously FAR SHORT from what Microsoft has been touting.

Microsoft has yet to fix the problem where Scandisk issues the "...Windows cannot open the volume for direct access..." error message sometimes displayed when running ScanDisk. This is a critical error, in my opinion.

Apparently Micro$oft will NEVER get it. Trustworth? Reliable? What a laugh.

They promosed no more pop-ups? WRONG! That's a LIE.

And it's so-called Security Alert Montitor says that NO firewall or antivirus software is recognized even though Norton AntiVirus and ZoneAlarm are running and ACTIVE. I ask you, "How much more standard can you get?"

As always, after waiting over a year and a half for SP2, this release of Micro$oft software is as pathetic as ever.

The problem on some machines with not opening the disk for direct access was Zone Alarm. The latest update has fixed it, it works fine now.
