NEWS Computer Associates has announced that its board of directors has nominated Laura Unger, former chairwoman of the SEC, to be an independent director of the company.
The move marks the latest twist in the company's move away from a period of upheaval, following a board room reshuffle and investigation by the SEC and DoJ.
As such Unger's nomination looks set to prove tactical both and strategic. Unger fills a position vacated by outgoing director Alex Serge Vieux.
Lewis Ranieri, chairman of CA, said in a statement: "Alex's expertise in business and the technology industry has been a true asset to the board and the company. We are delighted that Laura has accepted the board's nomination. Her financial and government experience will be a tremendous resource to the board as CA continues to move forward."
Unger was a commissioner of the SEC between 1997 and 2002 and served as chairwoman from February 2001 to August 2001.
After leaving the SEC Unger worked for CNBC as a regulatory expert.
Unger will stand for election along with eight current directors, who are elected for a one-year term. If elected, Unger will serve as one of seven independent directors on CA's nine-person Board of Directors.
