BMC tools simplify virtualisation

Promises to reduce cost and risk of change management

BMC Software, the service and systems-management software provider has launched nine tools that fit into its software-management portfolio and are intended to help with the deployment of virtualised systems.

According to the company, the new software is grounded in BMC's automated set of closed-loop change and configuration management process workflows. The company said the tools can "reduce the latency, cost and risk associated with change management by as much as 75 percent".

The tools are intended to deal with certain issues that can be thrown up by virtualisation. For example, virtualisation software means systems can generate virtual machines easily, and these can multiply until the number of virtual machines in use has an impact on system performance.

BMC's Application Performance and Analytics offering allows a business to actively manage service levels, so that it can expand the number of virtual machines without "drowning in server events and false alarms", the company said.

Other features of the new software include changes to BMC Capacity Management. This tool monitors the capacity requirements of IT systems — that is, the number of servers required to perform a particular task or run a particular installation — and, as the company puts it, replaces "educated guesses with automatic assessment, prioritisation of server workloads, and ongoing capacity monitoring".

There are another seven software applications that have now been upgraded, the company said.

BMC says it has worked on the software with Sun, Microsoft and VMware.
