Windows 7 may not be as fast off the mark in start up as Vista after all.

Despite claims that the new OS will be faster to boot up, one software company has reported that in many cases Vista actually outdoes Windows 7 in the speed stakes.

Iolo Technlogies said in its tests a brand new machine running Windows 7 takes 94 seconds to become usable, compared to 66 seconds for a Vista machine.

This could end up as a 'my dad's bigger than your dad' thread BUT, I have been using 7 since its availability on Technet, replacing Vista Ultimate; subjectively, it is a *lot* quicker to be usable from a cold boot, and is more responsive generally. So there!

we upgraded 2 PCs from Vista to Windows 7 and they boot quicker, close down quicker and switch between user accounts quicker.

A lot quicker, so these claims are very strange.

Boots in half the time on my PC for the release candidate, so I'll be very surprised if the gold version is any different.

I would like to know if this was from a blank install, or after they've moded it to include 3rd party apps to run at boot time (such as antivirus)

I too am running the RC version and could not possibly be tempted back to Vista. Had the two OS' insalled as Dual Boot for a while, but as soon as I got all my apps an drivers set up in W7 I never returned to Vista as it was painfully slow to boot compared to W7.

I'd just like to know if I'll be able to surf the internet with having to hard reboot the PC every 20 minutes due to all network connections hanging!

The only solution I can find to fixing this Vista issue is to uninstall SP1, however I then cannot have my firewall (Zone Alarm) running as it requires SP1!!

Absolute rubbish, Windows 7 is far faster than Vista on every machine I've built. And yes I've loaded them onto the same hardware builds...
