Microsoft has announced an ad-supported 'Starter' edition of Office to replace the Microsoft Works suite currently offered.
The free edition will only be available on new PCs and will include Excel and Word only. It's part of the Office 2010 family, due next year.

Unlike the Works suite, it will be compatible with Office, and is one of Microsoft's attempts to compete with increasing rivalry from open source offerings such as Google Apps.
