UNIX Based Front-End Processors Used for DOOCS at the TESLA Test Facility

Overview The DOOCS control systems, operating the TTF Linac at DESY, runs so far on SPARC desktops, SPARC-VME based boards and on PC's. The Operating Systems are Solaris/SPARC and Linux/x86. In order to be more flexible in purchasing VME processors for DOOCS they are now evaluating a x86 based VME board. This paper presents the use of VME at TTF in general and then compares the different features of the CPU's. Furthermore they describe the advantages to run Solaris/x86 Unix as the operating system on the VME-x86 processor.
