Grid Computing Now! - Grid and Licensing

Overview Historically, software as a creative product has been protected by intellectual property rights, in the form of patents, copyrights, trademarks, and trade secrets, and has been licensed under certain terms in order to raise revenue. Traditional software licensing mechanisms that worked well in the past have recently begun to emerge as obstacles to the adoption of new utility type computing paradigms such as grid. At the same time software licensing has eclipsed server hardware costs, making this a critical issue in enterprise grid deployment decisions. This paper, looks at commercial software licensing models, the technology trends that are putting pressure on them and some possible "Grid-friendly" solutions.
