Forecasting by Time Compression: Forecasting Highly Seasonal Items in Retail

Overview Forecasting data of highly seasonal items (items that are sold only for a short time during the year, but with large volumes) is a challenging task. Using the compression approach introduced in this paper, traditional forecasting techniques can be applied to transformed time series. Initial results seem to suggest that the accuracy of such an approach could be superior to a more standard way of time series modeling.
