Complexity Metric for XML Schema Documents

Overview Web Services, as a new type of distributed application, use XML documents for their data representations, so design of XML schemas play an important role in software development process and needs to be quantified for ease of maintainability. This paper proposes a new complexity metric for XML Schema documents (XSD). On the contrary of the available complexity metrics, the proposed metric is based on the internal architecture of the XSD components and hence considers the complexities of its building components. The proposed metric has been demonstrated with examples. Further a comparative study with other similar metrics proves its soundness and robustness.
