Overview Unwary employees open the door to untold numbers of intrusions when they fall prey to social engineering tricks. This PowerPoint presentation will help them learn what to watch out for and how to handle possible attacks.
Security firms tell frightening stories about how easy it is to walk into a company and walk out with confidential data and company assets, simply by relying on a few trusting employees to help them gain access. Social engineering tactics are getting more sophisticated all the time, but even the simplest tricks allow practitioners to take advantage of trusting or naïve employees to circumvent security mechanisms and gain access to networks.
One of the most effective steps you can take to prevent this exploitation is to raise staff awareness of the various ways social engineering can be applied. This presentation offers a series of scenarios illustrating common social engineering schemes and then offers suggestions on ways employees should respond. Among other things, they'll learn how some social engineers:
- Impersonate members of the IT department to get them to reveal passwords
- Play on their sympathy to obtain access to equipment or facilities
- Use intimidation to try to scare them into revealing confidential information
