Simplified Secure Remote Access Using IPsec, PKI, DNS, HTTP & NAT
Category: Security, Networking and Communications
Tags: pki, vpn, authentication, ssl, ip, network, applications
Overview This paper proposes a new approach for solving the existing challenges with IPsec VPN deployment, namely: locating VPN gateways with dynamic IP address, overlapping private LAN addresses and end-user authentication. IPSec provides security over the network layer. After a secure IP connection has been established by using IPsec, the new solution suggests using an innovative mix of embedded DNS and NAT to manage and scale the private network. Using HTTP with DNS and NAT, remote users can access web-enabled remote applications from their web-browsers using private DNS names like "Mailserver.private.xyzcompany.com". To authenticate remote end-users the paper proposes using SSL with certificate authentication.
