IBM-AstraZeneca II: A New Model for Collaborative IT Outsourcing

Overview This white paper examines the recently enacted, follow-on IT outsourcing agreement between AstraZeneca and IBM. This $1.4 billion, 7-year contract follows an original 2001 $1.7 billion, 7-year contract to provide IT infrastructure support to AZ. Despite its apparent similarity, this new agreement is dramatically different from the original contract in both scope and expectations and positions both AZ and IBM to succeed in the future. Based on direct insights from major players involved in the project, this report aspires to highlight the thinking and planning leading up to the agreement, the major strategic efforts and changes implemented, and the expectations for how the agreement should optimally position both AZ and IBM for the future.
