Overview Whereas a LAN (local area network) is a network that links computers, printers and other devices located in an office, a building or even a campus, a WAN (wide area network) is a system that extends for greater distances and is used to connect LANs (local area networks) together. To link LANs into a WAN, you can use private lines, such as the leased T1 connections used by many large companies, or public networks like the telephone network or the Internet. This paper explains WAN and its key components.
