Power Over Ethernet on Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches

Overview This paper describes the Power over Ethernet (PoE) capabilities for Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series Switches for both Cisco prestandard Inline Power as well as the standards-based IEEE 802.3af inline-power solutions. The Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series from Cisco Systems provides inline power on specific 10/100 and 10/100/1000 Ethernet modules (listed in the section "Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series PoE Line Cards"). This allows the system to power inline devices, such as IP phones, IP video phones, and wireless access points, over standard copper cabling (Category 5, 5e, or 6). A PoE daughter card, which is mounted on one of the inline power-capable Ethernet modules, delivers the necessary power to the inline devices.
