IPv6 Ethernet Chassis Switch: Scalable Platform With 96 Fast Ethernet and 6 Gigabit Ethernet Ports

Overview Large enterprises often benefit from the integration and port concentration that chassis-based switches offer. Shared high-bandwidth backplanes among blades allow faster connectivity among many users. In addition, adding the right intelligence to these blades makes it possible to roll out new services. The focus application for this chapter is a high port count Ethernet switch, as pictured in Figure 3-1. This system includes a large chassis with four blades supporting a total of 96 10/100 Mbps ports, one blade supporting 6 Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a 16-port switching module. The switching module supports direct links to all line cards plus a control module.
