The Frontier of Broadband Wireless Access: WiMAX Technology

Overview An alternative to wired broadband connectivity is on the horizon, known as WiMAX. WiMAX promises the freedom of wireless broadband connectivity in metropolitan areas, eliminating the need for wires to access the Internet in homes and offices. Based on the relatively new IEEE 802.16 standard, WiMAX broadband services are predicted to be less expensive than their wired counterparts - such as digital subscriber lines (DSL). And rural areas currently out of range of wired services, such as DSL, will now be able to enjoy high-speed Internet access since distances up to 30 miles are supported. WiMAX is the promise of the "last mile", delivering wireless connectivity to the masses.
