Wireless Communications - Not Just for Cell Phones
Category: Networking and Communications
Tags: cellular, infrastructure
Overview These days, the term "wireless communications" typically brings to mind cellular telephones. But "wireless" can also refer to a relatively old communications technology, known as Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems. Recent advances in LMR technology, coupled with a new regulatory framework, have brought new relevance to the use of LMR for government communications. Why is LMR so important? The terrorist attacks of September 11th highlighted that while cellular infrastructure is susceptible to damage or destruction, LMR communications are relatively immune to structural problems. Cell phone towers can be destroyed or damaged; radio frequency (RF) can not.
