Exploratory Data Visualization for Reliable Integration

Overview Integrating different kinds of data is a typical feature and basic requirement of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In particular, the modeling of environmental data and processes with GIS requires integration of many heterogeneous data sets. Required compatibility for integrating such data is often not given a priori. Data integration therefore often requires preprocessing of data, such as up- and downscaling, or interpolation, to establish compatibility. Such preprocessing, i.e., transforming of data sets may introduce error and uncertainty to the data. This paper focuses on visual exploration of heterogeneous, incompatible data for integration in order to arrive at greater reliabilty. Interactive investigation and visualization techniques for multiple data sets in a user-friendly environment are discussed.
