Using WiMAX for Volcano Monitoring During an Emergency: The WEIRD System
Category: Networking and Communications
Overview In the last few years wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (WMANs) increased momentum, due to the need to reach more and more user communities - in case isolated in impervious or rural areas - by overcoming the cost barriers of wired technologies. IEEE 802.16 (commonly known as WiMAX), due to both performances and costs, is one of the most promising technology to be accepted as the best WMAN solution. This paper shows how the WiMAX technology has been used to improve the volcano monitoring systems in emergency situations, with a special reference to Campi Flegrei volcanic area (Italy), thus demonstrating the importance of the deployment of new telecommunication technologies in emergency scenarios.
