10 New Year's resolutions for support techs

Overview No point waiting until the champagne starts flowing--now's as good a time as any to get those good intentions down on paper. See what one tech says she's going to strive for in 2006.

Looking ahead is an occupational necessity in the IT field, whether you're assessing new technologies, planning for future bandwidth needs, or building project plans. So it's not surprising that as 2005 draws to a close, IT pros are doing a little personal goal-setting, too.

To kick off TechRepublic's look at New Year's resolutions for IT professionals, veteran tech Becky Roberts is sharing some of her aspirations for next year. In 2006, she says, "I resolve...":

  • To practice the 'safe computing habits' I preach to the users by routinely backing up my data, not downloading every free utility with geek-appeal, and not bypassing firewall protection even though I am a computer god and know how.

  • To provide training and documentation for every rollout, upgrade, and procedural change instead of expecting the users to learn by osmosis.

  • To remind myself every day that this is not my network, these are not my computers, and I exist only to serve the needs of the company and its employees.

Check out her complete list and then join the discussion with resolutions of your own.
