Consultant's Corner: High Availability
Category: IT Management, Networking and Communications
Tags: downtime, applications
Overview The phrase high availability has been used to describe several types of IT architecture for some time, but people are often confused by the terminology with regard to the concepts, costs, and caveats associated with it. For some organizations, high availability may be the required recovery strategy. For others, it may be overkill? a waste of resources, time, and money. According to the Disaster Recovery Institute International (DRII), high availability is defined as, "Systems or applications requiring a very high level of reliability and availability. High availability systems typically operate 24x7 and usually require built in redundancy to minimize the risk of downtime due to hardware and/or telecommunication failures."
