Aspects of Network Migration From ATM to MPLS

Overview Many telecoms operators which provide voice services as a significant part of their business have installed in the last decades ATM network to carry the traffic. Choosing ATM as backbone technologies was an obvious choice at that time: ATM can carries voice and data, mostly Frame Relay, providing a good support for other further development such as video-conferencing or ISDN. Today the growing IP traffic is constraining the telecoms providers to adjust their network to function in this new climate with the maximum efficiency possible. Because of his nature, ATM is not the best way to carry IP traffic, nor the most efficient.
