Grounds for Message Governance

Overview Electronic communication is the lifeblood of today's organizations. The prevalence of, and dependence on, information exchange vehicles such as e-mail, Instant Messaging (IM) and File Transfer Protocol (FTP) increases the likelihood that proprietary information could be exposed to someone other than the intended recipient. Privacy is just one component of corporate and regulatory compliance. Others involve retention of business records (including e-mail) and an organization's ability to produce them in a litigation event. With messaging systems, organizations face considerable risk on multiple fronts. Vulnerabilities include fines for non-compliance with regulatory mandates, susceptibility to privacy breaches, lost productivity, increased costs for electronic discovery events, added storage capacity, data backup/recovery challenges and management complexity.
