Portuguese University Accelerates Cancer Research With High-Performance Computing

Overview The University of Beira Interior (Universidade da Beira Interior), Covilha, Portugal, wanted a High-Performance Computing (HPC) solution to aid in breast cancer research. Without such a solution, it was difficult for student researchers to perform the required research required to earn advanced degrees. Microsoft Portugal partnered with the university and deployed an HPC solution based on Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003. Microsoft also provided advanced technical support and scholarships for two doctoral candidates. As a result, the university expects to dramatically increase its ability to use three-dimensional imaging to assist with early cancer detection. Information acquired from the experience can be applied to other challenges and industries, and students can learn High Performance Computing skills, contributing to the community and the world.
