From UML to HDL: A Model Driven Architectural Approach to Hardware-Software Co-Design
Category: Software and Web Development
Tags: mda, open source, software
Overview The SMU Co-Design Project is an effort to target the problem of hardware/software co-design via an open source laboratory for studying hardware-software integration. The project focuses on the use of Model Driven Architectures (MDA) to define high-level model-based system descriptions that can be implemented in either hardware or software. Utilizing component and state diagrams based on the Unified Modeling Language (UML), the paper demonstrates MODCO, a transformation tool which takes a UML state diagram as input and generates HDL output suitable for use in Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) circuit design.
