A is for Act
The Identity Card Act received Royal Assent from the Queen on 30 March. The bill had a rocky passage through the House of Commons and faced fierce opposition in the House of Lords, and only finally got approval following a deal between MPs and peers which allows people to opt out of receiving an ID card when renewing their passport until 2010.
As soon as the ID card plans became law the government formed the Identity and Passport Service (IPS), which will be in charge of managing the ID cards scheme.
